Check Out “SURVEY SAYS” Featuring Lex Luger & Shanique Marie

808 Mafia, Atlanta, lex luger, Trap Music

Composer Michael Vincent Waller fuses Classical and Trap on his new song “SURVEY SAYS”, his first single from the forthcoming CLASSIC$ EP available this Spring.

By interwining the worlds of classical, hip-hop, and trap music, the song blends dreamy textures and minimal classical tones over a bouncy soundtrack. Female singer/rapper Shanique Marie of Jamaican collective, Equiknoxx, celebrates the pride and joy of unity and self-love on the vocals while co-producer Lex Luger flips MVW‘s original composition, “Love 1”, from his album Moments, into a hypnotic and mesmerizing sample.

“Classic$ blends hip-hop and contemporary classical music in a very hybrid setting. Rap music has sampled classical features for decades, but rarely do we see post-Philip-Glass minimalism incorporated, where these neo-classical cinematic influences are at the melodic core of the entire production. This sample-inspired composition process yields new results in the introspective and hypnotic textures in trap music.”

MVW

Michael Vincent Waller is an American composer based in New York City. His music has been described as lyrical and introspective, drawing inspiration from impressionism, post-minimalism and world music. In collaboration with noted soloists and ensembles including R. Andrew Lee, Stephane Ginsburg, Dante Boon, the S.E.M. Ensemble, and Ensemble Dedalus, Waller’s work has been performed at Carnegie Hall, ISSUE Project Room, Roulette, Palais de Tokyo Museum, and SXSW.

The first female of Equiknoxx, one of dancehall reggae’s most innovative production teams, Queen of the Eternal Children, Shanique Marie mixed her influence of Reggae with Jazz to create a fresh sound while keeping her other roots in R&B, Hip Hop on her critically acclaimed UNO EP. No stranger to the airwaves, her breakout single “Coconut Jelly Man” featuring Cali P enjoying worldwide rotation, being playlisted on radio stations in Switzerland and Amsterdam amassing over One Million streams, with constant play in the United Kingdom, Poland and in her homeland, Jamaica.

“‘Survey Says’ is about absolute positive self-worth,” adds Shanique Marie. “Working with Michael came naturally as we both came from classical backgrounds. I grew up as a trained jazz vocalist and Michael is a classical pianist. Everything just gelled. That’s why we are on a journey to create even more music to make people feel good”

Shanique Marie

Lex Luger has produced tracks on Rick Ross’s Teflon Don, Waka Flocka Flame’s Flockaveli (which he produced 11 of the 17 songs), Slim Thug’s Tha Thug Show and Kanye West’s and Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne. He is noted for using impossible-to-play drum-machine programming that utilizes the sounds of a Roland TR-808 in a fashion for which the original machine was never designed. Luger has also worked with artists such as Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, Soulja Boy, Snoop Dogg & Tyga.

This past week our hearts elated that the head Hot Girl in charge has found love in industry ghostwriter/rapper Pardison Fontaine! After hinting to a ‘boo’ for sometime the couple made it official posting with, about and on each other’s pages and we are sooooo here for this black love as we close out Black History Month.

Meek Mill vs Tekashi 69

Last week Tekashi 69 (and his security) confronted Meek Mill as he was leaving the an Atlanta club in the parking garage. No hands were thrown but the altercation was posted and included in Tekashi’s new music video “ZAZA”. In the track 69 also features lyrics ponited at Lil Durk as a response to Durk’s subtle diss of 69 in his Drake collab “Laugh Now, Cry Later”. Referencing Durk’s deceased signee King Von and Durk’s true street cred. Seems like Tekashi has yet to learn and intends on continuing being known for beefs, antics and social media stunts. We’re tired, are you?

Justin Timberlake Public Apology to Brittney + Janet

Framing Brittney a new FX documentary detailing Brittney Spears hectic life and career has prompter a way past due apology from the original JT. “I’ve seen the messages, tags, comments and concerns and I want to respond,” he wrote. “I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right.” SNL mocked the singer-songwriter, citing the ‘lame’ apology as 20 years late. As while he did mention Spears and Jackson by name, he did not give details or specific situations. While late, we are glad the apology has been made, now we wait for the actions behind the words.

That’s it for this week, Happy Messy Monday!

MsRivercity here taking you on a walk down memory lane with some of your favorite Atlanta rap celebrities. For those that don’t know, I was an editor at OZONE Magazine and handled viral promotions for DJ Scream’s mixtapes. I got to be a fly on the wall during the making of some pretty epic moments. Praise God for the opportunities. The pandemic has given me time to go through the archives and now I present to you some of my most treasured moments caught on camera:

2 Chainz Ludacris Playaz Circle
Playaz Circle and Ludacris (Yes, that’s Tity Boi and Dolla)

Crime Mob Diamond Princess MsRivercity
Crime Mob circa 2006. “Knuck If You Buck” was still the crunkest song in the club (still is really). Look at young Diamond & Princess!

DJ Scream 2006 MsRivercity
DJ Scream circa 2006. I met DJ Scream when he was touring with Crime Mob. Scream never left the house without those white sunglasses. Heavy in the Streets!

Rocko Future DJ Esco Magic Video Shoot MsRivercity
Rocko, Future, DJ Esco and Friends at Magic City. This was a breakthrough moment for Future. The next day this party was all over the internet. (Check my throwback “Dirty Sprite” interview with Future at the end of this article.)

Hot 107.9 Hoodrich Radio show with guests Rocko, Future, 2 Chainz, DJ Drama. Shouts out to DJ Sense. DJ Scream had let go of the sunglasses by this time.

Gorilla Zoe Zaytoven Listening Party by MsRivercity

OJ da Juiceman Atlanta photo by MsRivercity
OJ da Juiceman on the Eastside circa 2010. OJ’s first magazine article was with OZONE Magazine and I was blessed to do the cover interview. You can watch a snippet of some old footage from DBS Sounds down below.

Waka Flocka video shoot photo by MsRivercity
Waka Flocka circa 2009. Waka’s “O Let’s Do It” was the hottest song in the open mic clubs on the Northside of Atlanta. We introduced him to DJ Scream and Scream cleaned up the song for the radio. Once it premiered on Hoodrich Radio it became a nationwide hit. Waka was signed to Brick Squad at the time, but he pushed everything himself and made the come up through a true independent grind.

TI and Tiny photo by MsRivrcity
T.I. and Tiny circa 2008. The pink Polo era.

Young Jeezy The Recession Album Signing photo by MsRivercity
Young Jeezy at “The Recession” album signing in 2008. (Ironically suitable for a re-post at this time.) The line to the record store was out the door and I had to fight my way to the front for this photo. One time, I snuck in the back door at a concert with Jeezy’s crew and pretended to be part of the entourage. I still have no idea how I got away with that one, but a hustling photographer will find a way to be in the right place at the right time.

That about does it for this round of photos. I’ll have more coming soon. Be sure to follow me on Instagram @MsRivercity and enter the contest to win the OJ cd. It’s packaged and ready to go. I’ll announce the winner on Throwback Thursday, March 4th, 2021 at 12pm.
